Chuen Tat Shu Uk

This building locates at the corner of Leighton Road and Wong Nai Chung Road. "Chuen Tat Shu Uk" owned by the wife of artist Ah Chung was on the second floor in the 70s and the 80s. It sold many Taiwanese books including those by Sammo. I remember that the bookstore was very cosy and had several cushions for book readers. The lighting was also very warm and comforting. The building remains the same after many years. The window frames on above the second floor are still very original.

Buildings in the 70s

There are still many buildings like these around. They may not be beautiful at the first sight, however, they reflect a lot about the culture here in Hong Kong. First, they were built with high utilitisation rates because of the land scarcity. Second, the buildings are usually with many windows, in fact, windows are arranged in a row to reduce the dependence on eletric lights. Although most of them are in a similar style, the buildings are usually very solid and robust.
